Sunset @ Staple Tors

The staple tors are within easy reach from Cox Tor car Park on the Tavistock – Princetown road near Merrivale and are extremely photogenic.

We climbed up and continued to Roos Tor, which was probably the most enjoyable part of the walk, From Roos Tor we could have a glimpse of the Northern Moor, which we visited earlier today.

Looking back from Roos Tor to Great Staple Tor:

It is hard to visit the Staples Tors without thinking of Alex Nail’s iconic pictures.

Climbed to Yes Tor to find out if Roadford Lake is visible from the summit, and indeed it is ( just you can’t see it in the picture …)

The sun was setting almost at its most southerly point, just to the west of Great Links Tor.

I was very thankful to the very clear (although quite icy) track leading me back to the car next to West Mill tor.

Almost Solstice, almost sunset

Winter Solstice trivia: Although the winter solstice is the shortest day, its not the day when the sunset is earliest (15 Dec.), and not the day when sunrise is latest (1 Jan.)

Dec. 21st is just 2 sec. shorter than it neigbours, but this different is not constant and the length of the days changes dramatically around the spring and autumn equinox to almost 4 min. per day
